Perhaps are largest amount of
e-mail questions and phone calls is based on the requirements to install an LT1
into a 3.4/3.8 equipped F-body. Unless you decide to wire it yourself, you
will need the entire chart below***. The swap is broken down into 2
charts. The first chart is a requirement regardless of year, meaning all
the parts are required for installation. The second chart is year
specific, meaning that you will need to specifically change those parts based on
the year of the donor engine/transmission. You will need these parts in
addition to the first chart. Generally speaking, we suggest having an
entire donor car for the swap.
Mandatory components required for the
swap
| Component |
Reason |
| Complete engine
assembly |
Every component is different with
the exception of the tensioner and A/C compressor which interchange on
the 3.4's. Nothing interchanges on the 3.8 |
| Transmission |
The Bolt pattern is completely
different from V6 to V8 |
| Engine Cradle |
An LT1 engine cradle is formed
different to sit lower. The use of the LT1 mounts is also
required. |
| Radiator

|
The LT1 radiator uses an additional
steam line on the RH tank, and a oil cooler/heater return line on the LH
tank. LT1's also use a low coolant sensor. |
| Fuel Pump Assembly |
Although the V6's and V8's operate
at the same PSI, the V8's use a higher volume. |
| Gauge Cluster |
The speed reading is different, and
the tach reading is different. Not changing the clusters will
cause the tach reading to be erratic. Oil PSI and water
temperature readings are also different. |
| Harnesses |
The engine harness & PCM are all
required changes. |
| Hoses |
Because the LT1 is reverse flow
cooling, the coolant hoses are in different locations and have bleeders
installed. The A/C hose is also different. |
| Suspension |
LT1 coil springs are required from
the added weight. Your vehicle will sit low if you do not change
the springs, but also have poor handling since springs are rated for a
certain weight. |
| Brakes |
There is no requirement to change
brakes, although all the LT1 cars are equipped with rear disc
brakes. ASR/Traction control equipped LT1's will require a
rear-end change to correctly operate the ASR system. |

Legend : Y = Yes (Requires Change), N
= No (Requires no change)
-
F (Cooling Fans) - LT1's
use dual cooling fans.
-
A (Airbag Sensors) - 93-95
models use a 3 sensor system, 96-97 use a single sensor system.
-
D (Dash Assembly) - 97
uses a totally different dash VS the 93-96 Camaros. Firebirds do
not need to change the dash.
-
W (Wiring) - All the
wiring (Relay harness, dash harness, etc).
***Note -
Swaps can be performed in many methods, including and excluding many
parts. The charts above are just suggestions of the staff at Trans Am
Creations for proper trouble free installation and reliability.
