In 1986, DOT required the addition
of a third brake light, also known as the center high mount stop light
(CHMSL). The brake lights were located in different locations in different
years. The CHMSL works off an additional brake switch, in the event that the
original brake switch fails, there is still a brake light.
- 1986 - Outside on the top of the hatch.
- 1987-1990
- Camaro - Inside the center rear hatch spoiler.
- Firebird - Under the center rear hatch spoiler.
- 1991-1992 - Inside the top of the hatch,
except for convertibles, which remained in the center hatch spoiler.
- 1993-2002 - Inside the rear hatch spoiler.
TECH NOTE : On 1993
and newer models, a burnt out bulb may cause the "ABS" light to light.
