The following listing is what is
necessary to convert any 85-87 305 carburetor equipped F-Body to a TPI equipped
motor. The actual intakes interchange between years, so there is no need
to swap an entire motor, just the intake. If you don't own an F-body, you
will require similar changes, and some additional alterations and parts.

Required components:
- TPI fuel tank and in-tank fuel pump - The TPI
pump runs at 40-47 PSI vs the 9-12 PSI TBI & carbureted pump. You
will also need an 85-92 TPI or 88-92 TBI fuel tank. The fuel injected
tanks have a baffle on the inside to keep fuel by the pump. Failure to
swap tanks causes stumbling on turns and causes premature failure of the
pump as the fuel actually cools the pump.
- TPI rubber chassis to fuel rail lines - TPI
lines are longer. Also, the fuel lines are on the RH side of the
chassis on a carbureted car VS the LH side on a TBI/TPI car. It will
be necessart to extend the lines to the other side. Remember, you need
a high pressure hose.
- TPI throttle cable, cruise control cable, and TV
cable (automatic only) - The TPI throttle is several inches forward,
requiring the above cables being longer as well. The TPI cables much match
the year of the TPI throttle unit [85-88 or 89-92] as they use different
ends.
- TPI engine harness and ECM - Since TPI uses 8
injectors, it uses a different ECM and harness. It will be easier if
you swap a harness from the same year and make vehicle, as it will plug
right into the dash with no changes. For example, if you have an 85
carbureted Camaro, you would want an 85 TPI Camaro harness. If you
mismatch years and models, the harness will require some rewiring.
There was no TPI 82-84, so a modified 86-87 harness would be suggested.
- TPI air ducting - TPI's use different air
ducting. If you have a Camaro, you will need a Camaro set of
ducting. A Firebird requires Trans Am ducting.
- TPI upper radiator hose - The angle is
different where it meets the thermostat housing.
- TPI cooling fans - All 85-92 TPI motors use
electric cooling fans due to the throttle interfering with a mechanical
fan. 87-92 model TPIs use dual electric fans to compensate for the HP
increase. Any of the electrical fans will swap right out with the
mechanical shrouds.
Optional components:
- TPI radiator - The TPI radiator uses a return
line from the heater. This can be modified by altering the hoses from
the heater.
- TPI exhaust - TPI motors use exhaust with
larger diameter tubes. It would be desirable to change the exhaust or add
headers to retain all the TPI potential.
- TPI camshaft - TPI engines use a more
aggressive camshaft profile, which is also a part of the HP advantage over a
carbureted engine.
