From 1967 to 1985, GM used a standard latch on your chassis to latch your hatch.  In 1985, GM introduced the automatic hatch pull-down.  It is undetermined whether GM did this to protect the glass from being damaged, or whether they were mimicking the Cadillac.  Either choice, these units are prone to malfunction.  In late 1991, GM introduced a slightly more durable unit, which is not interchangeable with the 85-91 units, and in 1993, GM deleted this unit from the F-body.  We are told the #1 reason for this units being damaged is slamming the hatch down, and having poor or weak hydraulic assisted hatch struts.  Remote trunk lid/hatch release solenoids are options on all 70-02 F-bodies.
