There were many different sizes wheels offered throughout the different generations.  Finding a set of aftermarket wheels that interests you is an easy task, but finding the proper size and dimensions is another story.  We have made a simple method for measuring your wheel.  The wheel needs to be off for these measurements.

Factory Installed Wheels

Year Bolt Pattern Wheel Size Backspacing
67-69 4.75" 14" 4.50"
15" 4.50"
70-81 14" 4.50"
15" 4.50"
82-92 14" 4.50"
15" 4.50"
16" Front 4.75"
16" Rear 5.25"
93-02 16" 6.875"

  • Lug count : By far the easiest measurement, it indicates the amount of lug holes.

  • Wheel size : A wheel as 2 dimensions, the diameter and the width.  The width is simple to measure, you measure from the inside lips.  If you measure from the outside, you will get a width approximately 1" larger than it should.   The diameter of the wheel is more difficult to measure since you can't measure between the inside lips, but you can measure from the outside lip, and subtract about 1".   Always measure in the center.

Proper measurment, 7" for this example.  Incorrect measurement, indicates 8", but is not the actual width.  Measure from the outside, and subtract approx 1". Measurement shows 16", subtract 1", and the result is a 15" wheel.

  • Backspacing :  Backspacing is very important to how the wheel sits relative to the axle face.  A wheel with a small backspace will sit further out (away from the car).  A wheel with a larger backspace will sit further in (towards the car).  Backspace can be measured by using a flat piece of wood.   Measure the distance from the bottom of the wood to the face of the wheel.  Most cars can accommodate up to 1/2" tolerance without any interference issues.

Backspace measurement, shows approx. 4.5" in our example.

  • Bolt pattern :  The bolt pattern is a little more difficult to measure, and our method only works on 5-lug wheels.   The bolt pattern is the distance between the studs.  Most GM RWD cars use a bolt pattern of 4.75".  Using a flat object, measure from the bottom center stud, to the top of the 2 top studs.

Backspacing measurement, from bottom stud hole to center of top 2 stud holes, 4.75" shown here.
